Orthodontics can be an effective solution to crooked, crowded or spaced teeth as well as an incorrect jaw bite. Orthopaedics are often used to correct skeletal anomalies in younger patients.
Orthodontics/Orthopaedics involves the moving or straightening of the teeth in order to correct the jaw alignment. This procedure can improve the strength, functionality and aesthetic appearance as well as assist in the care and long-term health of teeth, gums and jaw. This is achieved by spreading biting and chewing pressure evenly across the jaw and teeth.
Predominantly carried out on children and adolescents, orthodontic treatment involves wearing braces over a period of 1-2 years. Braces are usually made from wire and small springs which are attached to a metal plate. Once affixed to the teeth the braces apply a gentle pressure which, over time, encourages them to move into a more desirable position. Ideally, this process is performed while the teeth are still developing, however, effective results can still be achieved among adults who make up a large proportion of our orthodontic patients.
